What is radon?

Radon is a natural radioactive gas that comes from uranium in the ground. Utah's soil is rich in uranium and the state has 5X more homes with high radon levels than the national average. Also radon is odorless, tasteless, and invisible, and the only way to know your home's radon level is to test for it.
Why should you care?
Radon is a known human carcinogen and is the second leading cause of lung cancer, just behind smoking. Further lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in Utah even though it has the lowest percentage of adult smokers in the country. This may be attributed to the high rates of radon in the state.

1 in 3 Utah homes has unsafe levels of radon

One third of radon tests conducted in Utah show levels considered unsafe by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), World Health Organization, American Cancer Society, Surgeon General, and Huntsman Cancer Institute. Basically radon is in all homes to some degree, and testing is the only way to know your home's radon level.
All homes should be tested for radon

The EPA states that all homes should be tested for radon because you can’t see it, smell it, or taste it.

Therefore if you have children, pets, and other loved ones that spend a lot of time in your home, you want to ensure they are protected from the dangerous health effects of radon.
