Radon test instructions

Radon testing is easy and will only take 10 minutes of your time over a two-day testing period. Start by watching this video.

Step-by-step radon testing instructions

1. Prep

  • Start by watching the test instructions video at the top of this page.
  • Close all windows and exterior doors 12 hours before starting the test, and keep them closed during the test. Brief exterior door entry and exit are fine, and interior doors can be used as usual.
  • Use your central air or heater as usual (fan on auto). Swamp coolers will void the test, so we recommend testing in a colder month.

2. Test

  • Write the Kit Serial ID and the Registration Code found on the backside of the charcoal test. You will need this information for step #3.
  • Place the test in a room on the lowest livable level (e.g., bedroom or living area). Position the test on a chair or table at least: 20 inches above the floor, 12 inches from exterior walls, 3 feet from any windows, and 6 inches from any other object.
  • To begin the test, remove the charcoal container from the plastic bag and place it paper-side up. The test begins as soon as the plastic bag is removed. Record the start time and date, then text “BEGIN” to (435) 465-1320.
  • Run the test for 48-96 hours. Do not exceed 96 hours.
  • To end the test, place the charcoal container in the provided mailer and seal it. Record the end time and date.

Tip: Create a reminder on your phone to notify yourself when to stop the test.

Where to place your radon test

The test should be at least: 12 inches from exterior walls, 20 inches above the floor, 3 feet away from windows, and 6 inches away from any other object.
Place the test on the lowest livable level of your home where it will not be disturbed. If you have an unfinished basement, place the test there.
Do not place in a bathroom, kitchen, closet, furnace room, or crawlspace. A bedroom or living room are ideal locations.

3. Submit

  • Using the information in step #2, register your test with Alpha Energy Laboratories/Eurofins by going to register.aelabs.com.

4. Ship

  • Radon testing is very time-sensitive. As soon as the test ends, place the provided pre-paid shipping label on the side with the “shipping checklist,” and drop it in your mailbox or take it to the post office.
  • Your test will be delivered to Alpha Energy Laboratories/Eurofins in Texas. They will send you the test results within 7-14 days of receipt.
