October 18th-24th is National Radon Action Week and even though you don't get the week off, it helps to remind people to take action against this deadly gas.
Radon is a radioactive gas that is natural and is everywhere. Radon is continually produced by the decay of uranium, which occurs naturally in soils and rocks. Once produced, radon escapes into the open air unless it enters a building or enclosed space.
The reason Radon is so dangerous is that it is the leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. for non-smokers and the second leading cause for smokers. According to the EPA, 21,000 lung cancer deaths in the United States each year related to radon.
Although Utah has the lowest rate of smoking in the U.S., lung cancer is the leading cause of death among all cancers. It is estimated that 1 in 3 homes in Utah have dangerous levels of high radon and all homes should be tested.
Utah Radon Services offers free radon testing kits that we can mail to you and you can easily test your own home. If your home does have high levels of radon, the problem can be fixed with a radon mitigation system.
Take action during this year's National Radon Action week by getting your home tested.
