test my home for radon

If you tested your house for radon gas and discovered levels below the action levels recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the World Health Organization (WHO), you may think you’re in the clear forever, but that’s not true. Think of radon like a cavity—you might go to the dentist and find out you are cavity-free, but that doesn’t mean you’ll never have one again! With radon, your attention should be less on whether you should ever test again and more on how often you should test your home.

Over time, aspects of your home can change, including the radon level. If your home’s level increases, you want to make sure you catch it quickly to avoid long-term exposure for your family.

When to re-test your home for radon

It is recommended to test your home for radon every two years, but you should also consider testing in the following circumstances:

  • When you make structural changes to your home. Radon gas enters your home through cracks and pores in the foundation, walls, floor gaps, and construction joints. Any renovations that are made to the home can change the ventilation as well as the soil beneath the home, which can open up new ways for radon to enter.
  • When you make changes to living arrangements. For example, if you test your home and a year or two later decide to convert a basement room into a bedroom, office, or playroom for kids, you should test your home again. The ground level of your home is the closest radon entry point, so if there is increased activity on that floor of your home, you should be aware of the radon exposure.
  • When there are seasonal changes. Radon levels are higher in the winter than at other times of the year. If you had your home tested in the summer, your next test should be in the winter (and vice versa).
